Issue 18 – June 1st
The 140 days of the 87th Texas Legislature ended yesterday and adjourned Sine die (without any future date for resumption). Many bills in the Senate were forced to be withdrawn from the Senate Local and Uncontested Calendar including two we were tracking. While in the House, enough Democrats left the chamber Sunday to prevent a quorum and vote on what they considered overly restrictive voting rights for Texas citizens. The next regular session will not start until 2023. However, with redistricting postponed due to delayed census data, there will need to be a Special Session called in the fall that will impact all levels of government, but particularly for the two new congressional seats. That Special Session will also address spending $16 billion in federal pandemic aid.
