The House Pensions Investments and Financial Services Committee’s first organizational meeting and< introductory presentations by overseen state agencies is scheduled for 8:00am Wednesday March 3rd.
This past week the priorities and agenda for the 87th Texas Legislature beyond the recent power outages became more apparent. First, the filing of House Bills 3, 4, and 5 and then Lt. Governor Patrick announced 31 Priorities for the Senate.
The very lowest bill numbers are reserved in advance by leadership to signify the highest priorities for their legislative agenda. In every session HB1 and SB1 will be the General Appropriations Bill or biennial budget. For the 87th Legislature the House priorities seek to address the Covid-19 related traumas of the past year: HB3 – state and local government responses to a pandemic disaster; creating a criminal offense. HB4 – Relating to telemedicine, telehealth, and technology-related health care services. And HB5 – Relating to the expansion of broadband services to certain areas.
Although a mixed bag of 31 items, the Lt. Governor stated these “priorities address issues that are critical to Texans at this time.” His priorities also touch on recent events such as the stability of Texas power grid, pandemic impacts, and a new dust up over the Star Spangled Banner. The list is completed with typical conservative standards: abortion ban, gun rights, charter schools, and freedom to worship.
During my tenure as Commissioner, the Savings and Mortgage Lending Department had two high priority legislative initiatives HB10 implementing the NMLS licensing regime and SB16 granting registration and oversight of mortgage servicing. Here’s to not being on any priority list.
